modern 18th century cosmetics

{photo credit: For the Joy & Jennylafleur}

For Taylor's make-up I did a modern take 18th century cosmetics. I airbrushed her foundation in a pale shade to give her the creamy complexion so admired at the time. Defined eyebrows, cream blush on the eyelids & cheeks and a berry lip stain completed the look.

towering hair

{photo credit: For the Joy}

Inspired by the towering hairstyles of the late 1770s (and Taylor's luxurious head of hair), I created one of my favorite historical hairstyles for our recent photoshoot.

{photo credit: For the Joy & Jennylafleur}

I used a frame made of hair donuts & wire as my under-structure and faux hair rolls (or "boucles") to accent the finished style - the rest was all Taylor's own hair. Whew! The very front was curled and teased for texture and to add softness to the face.

Materials used:
frame
bobby pins
Paul Mitchell Spray Wax (for back loop)
Paul Mitchell Extra Body Finishing Spray

A Head For Fashion

Thanks to the incredible generosity of a scholarship from Sense & Sensibility Patterns, I spent last weekend in Colonial Williamsburg attending the Conference "A Head For Fashion: Hair, Wigs, Cosmetics & Jewelry" - it was great! It was such a joy attend an event that combined my two passions, hairdressing & history!

It's official - I passed my cosmetology state board exams!! I'm now qualified to be a licensed professional!

Thanks all for your love, encouragement, help and support on my journey - especially the staff of PMTS Woodbridge and most especially the fabulous Miss Dawn - I could not have reached this achievement without you guys! Hugs!

practice makes perfect

Today is going to require a lot of tea... My practical boards are tomorrow. Yikes! The only way to keep the nerves at bay is to practice. Umm... I wonder how many times I can run through the test today?

my practical test proctor

I have the best sister in the world, it's true. Not only has she spent her day being my state board test proctor (so I can practice), she is washing my cholesterol coated doll heads (truly horrific smelly stuff used to mock hair color for the test) . If that isn't love I don't know what is!

written exam - done!

Thanks all for the prayers and good wishes this morning! Glad that is done - now to wait for the results and prep for the practical boards, which I take on Monday! In the meantime I'm going to enjoy my post-test treat of mason jar flowers from Whole Foods...

Ginger's Gala Hairdo

Costume College: Inspired by a photo from the early 1920s, I styled Ginger of A Scene in the Past's hair on Gala night at Costume College to compliment her Lanvin Robe de Style inspired gown. She created & hand beaded her gown and bought vintage hair combs to accent her hair - doesn't she look amazing?! .

big RED hair

Costume College: Big hair, 1780s style. This style was created with a combination of my own hair and hair pieces/rats.

quick change regency hair

Costume College: My second costume of the weekend, c1799. This I created with my own hair. I started with my 1840s hairstyle, removing the clip-in curls, and changing my center front part to a softer back-swept front with wispy curls. The ends of that front section I curled with a small Marcel iron and pinned over my bun to create height and movement. Not bad at all for a 15 minute quick change!

RED Victorians

Costume College Hair: My first costume and historic hairstyle of of the weekend, the 1840s. This I created this with my own hair, supplemented with clip-in sausage curls in the front and a curl to finish off (read: cover the pins) the high bun. I was super happy with the results, although I have to say no matter how well done, I think RED hair with a somber Victorian dress is a bit too jarring!

the finished Roman hair

Costume College Hair: First up - my finished Roman Hair. I loved everything about this look, it was my favorite hair of the weekend!

home from Costume College 2014

I had a fabulous time in LA! Somehow I was able to finish all my hair before my plane left Virginia. It was a race to the finish though!

I have lots of photos of my finished work to share but I need to recover from jet-lag and catch up on some real life first...

Roman hair fun

Heat resistant hair + perm rod + steamer

So tired of rope braids and rolling perm rods! It doesn't really look like it but my hair pieces are finally coming together. I'm super behind though, ahhh! I really need time to stand still for a day or so if anyone can arrange that... I have to say my Roman hairpiece is my favorite - having WAY too much fun with this one!

three short days

Today's goal? HAIR! I need to arrive in LA in three short days with finished hair pieces for a hedgehog of doom, a baby pouf, random Regency curls and some Ancient Rome goodness.

Today will be about sorting out a plan for the curling/prep. I have curlers (perm rods, wet-set curlers, rag curlers, wooden dowels) and setting options (boiling water, steam, hot tools for heat resist fibers) to play with. Wish me luck!

officially graduated

Tonight I received my diploma from PMTS Woodbridge and officially became "alumni". It still doesn't feel real that I really accomplished this huge goal.

The moment was made all the more sweet because of the presence of my fellow graduates, my friends. How appropriate to celebrate our accomplishment together!!

last chance!

It's official, my last day taking clients at Paul Mitchell is May 31st! (I won't graduate for another week but I need to spend that time working on tests and graduation paperwork.) I can't believe the time has flown so fast!

So if you want to sit in my shiny green chair (and pay those sweet school prices) one last time, call PMTS today at 703.498.2008 and request Jenny-Rose to book your hair, make-up or facial appointment with me!

It's been a long day but a good day - one of those days that the challenge of a complicated salon service is forgotten in the satisfaction and pride of it's beautiful results.

I'm also loving my new look - cherry colored hair is such fun!

The fun, foppery, feathers, & Fabulousity that was the Third Annual Française Dinner. Not only did I have a wonderful evening, I officially had the highest hair in the room. We measured. I'd say mission accomplished!
